Business manager Lucy Chatwin and GP Alex Meyer share details of forthcoming activity by West Midlands AHSN with local health practitioners as part of a national initiative

Atrial fibrillation is a condition which may exhibit no symptoms but which can, if untreated, lead to stroke and potentially life-changing impacts on individuals and families affected. The financial impact of these preventable incidents on the NHS, and on the social care system, is also significant, as is discussed in the video.

Within a typical West Midlands CCG area, covering a population of 1m+, around 10,000 people are estimated to be at risk from AF-related stroke or undiagnosed AF.

As part of a national initiative, the Academic Science Health Network (AHSN) in the West Midlands will be supporting a range of activities from early 2019. The aim of these will be to raise awareness amongst health professionals, to facilitate improvements in the detection of undiagnosed patients and their subsequent management, and to optimise care given to those with an existing diagnosis of atrial fibrillation

Health practitioners who want to find out how they can get involved should contact Lucy Chatwin.
