Making neighbourhoods accessible with crowd-sourced data & talking map app

Linda Chandler and Amanda Derrick talk about a ‘last mile digital innovation’ that will help visually impaired people navigate a local area - with potential to do much more for local communities

‘St Albans Unlocked’ is blazing a trail with huge potential benefits for the health and wellbeing of local communities.

Linda Chandler and Amanda Derrick are working with an app called Soundscape, developed by Microsoft to help people with visual impairments find their way from A to B.

Soundscape (which is free to download) describes for users the location and key facts about the road crossings, buildings and other landmarks around them as they move about. But it needs these to be marked accurately on Open Street Map, on which the app is built.

Volunteers in St Albans are adding data to OSM to ‘unlock’ the locality for Soundscape users. These need not only be people with visual impairments. The app could support anyone who finds getting around challenging (eg those with mild dementia), as well as being enjoyed by local residents and tourists alike.

For local authorities, a solution to the problem of maintaining information about local assets, that engages communities and supports vulnerable locals, has got to be worth exploring further.

Retro-fitting the sensors can work and is worth the effort but getting the fibre into the ground at the start of new build developments is essential. Knowing what to do with the raw data once it starts to flow back up the pipeline is key. All this takes place at 58 Victoria Embankment (the NESTA building) two minutes walk from London Blackfriars Station. Cameras are rolling by 11:00am and it's all over bar the handshakes by 3:40pm. But let’s be frank, it’s the quality of the brain food not the sandwiches that make this the single most useful ticket for those shaping the future of UK local public services.

An Audience with CLGdotTV is now running eight times a year. We invite a studio audience of around 50 to join us to make five CLGdotTV programmes. There are no power-points and the questions and interventions from the floor are valued as much as much as the panellists' contributions.

Some guests stay with us for just one programme and some stay for the lot. It’s a logistical nightmare but somehow we make it work. Each programme is broadcast on CLGdotTV. Plus we edit a 30-40 minute video summary of the day’s conversations with clips from all the debates.
