Peter Wells, Head of Policy, Open Data Institute & Brad Smith, Web Services Manager, Hertfordshire CC talk to Hilary Simpson of Sleuth Co-op 27 June

Peter Wells describes how the ODI has been working with four councils to explore how open data can be used to improve services. For example, Doncaster Council’s ‘open data scan’ exposed data previously buried in paper files and got it ‘out there’ to help build services for young people seeking work. Waltham Forest set about capturing data from users of its arts and culture places (working out the ethical issues along the way) to help them start engaging people beyond the usual suspects with these local facilities.

Brad talks about how Hertfordshire CC uses data gathered from a range of sources to improve the usefulness and usability of its website. Such data comes from user testing, search data, web visitor data, and from analysis of how people interact with individual web pages.
